Voice Dictation: the State of the Art

The May Southeastern Vermont Computer Users Group meeting will be held on Tuesday, May 15, 7:00 PM, at The Marlboro College Graduate Center. After a short business meeting and our usual question and answer session, Adrian Segar will give a presentation entitled Voice Dictation: the State of the Art. He writes:

On May 15th I'll be giving a presentation on iListen, state of the art dictation software for the Macintosh. I've tried several voice-to-text software products over the years, but iListen is the first I've found that is accurate and speedy enough to be really useful. The program learns how you speak and pronounce words and improves rapidly the more you use it. It handles connected speech well; in fact it often understands connected speech better than disconnected words.

The software costs about $100 plus the cost of a suitable headset. Besides demonstrating the software, including how you train iListen for a particular person's voice and how it learns from its mistakes, I'll also be talking about my experience dictating as opposed to typing my book. The differences between these two ways of getting words onto paper were a big surprise to me, and I'll share my findings during the talk.

About our next meeting.
