The World of Virtual Computers - Running Windows and Linux on the Macintosh

The November Southeastern Vermont Computer Users Group meeting will be held on Tuesday, November 20, 7:00 PM, at The Marlboro College Graduate Center. After a short business meeting and our usual question and answer session, Steve Kohner will close 2007 with a presentation entitled The World of Virtual Computers - Running Windows and Linux on the Macintosh .

Virtual Computing - the ability to run software based "Virtual Computers" and multiple operating systems on one machine at the same time is changing the landscape of modern computing. While this has been a fast growing and increasingly important field in the corporate enterprise world of servers and networks, only recently has efficient Virtual Machine Technology become available to the personal desktop.

Steve Kohner will give a brief overview of virtual computing, and will then demonstrate Parallels Desktop 3.0 for Macintosh which allows you to run any version of Windows as well as numerous other operating systems alongside Macintosh OSX. Parallels allows you to run Windows on your Mac in an entirely isolated secure environment but also allows for completely fluid and flexible interaction between both operating systems. Steve will explain the benefits of running multiple operating systems, demonstrate some surprising features in Parallels Desktop software and show us how to run Linux as well as Windows on the Intel based Macintosh.

Steve Kohner is a photographer & graphic designer who owns Sweet Pond Studio in Guilford, Vermont offering commercial, architectural & fine art photography as well as graphic design for print and web, along with related marketing and technical consulting. He has been involved in photography for almost fifty years, when at the age of nine, he learned how to develop and print black and white film, later graduating to printing color negatives. His work has been exhibited, collected and published nationally and beyond and has appeared in such publications as Popular Photography, Time Magazine, USA Today, American Photographer, Custom Builder, Desktop Publishers Journal, Hope Magazine and many others including the Brattleboro Reformer!
